#234 - Biodiversity and Nature Positive: Nature Tech for a Better Planet

Biodiversity is essential for stabilizing environmental systems, including climate regulation and soil health; supporting human culture and education, including ecotourism; sustaining habitats for plants, animals, and microorganisms; and providing critical resources like food, timber, and medicinal compounds. In fact, Boston Consulting Group reports that the economic value of biodiversity is equivalent to over $150 trillion per year—more than twice the world’s total GDP. However, the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem degradation driven by our economic activities are recognized as severe and growing threats.

Against this backdrop, there is a global movement to pursue "Nature Positive," which aims to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. As international frameworks such as the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) advance, companies are increasingly compelled to address biodiversity. In this report, we examine recent developments surrounding biodiversity and introduce Nature Tech, which supports biodiversity restoration and conservation, categorized into four areas: "Biodiversity Monitoring," "Impact and Risk Assessment," "Conservation and Restoration," and "Nature Finance." Biodiversity is an extremely complex issue, making it challenging to measure and quantify, and there are funding hurdles to address. However, with the effective use of Nature Tech and a long-term perspective, there is potential for new business opportunities.
